<p>Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday expressed anguish over the treatment meted out to Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade in the United States and termed it “deplorable” even as an outraged Parliament condemned the incident, urging the government to take strong steps to uphold the dignity of the women and the country.<br /><br /></p>.<p>With Parliament expressing outrage and political leaders cutting across the party lines coming together to condemn the issue, India hoped that the US will understand its “loud and clear” message as several activists also staged a protest in front of the US Embassy in Delhi.<br /><br />“I am very confident that our message, which is loud and clear, will be understood,” External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid told reporters outside Parliament soon after the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha expressed anger over the high handedness of Obama administration. He described as very “discomforting” the treatment meted out to the diplomat. He said the government is making all-out efforts to protect the dignity of the official who is a “valuable” representative of the government of India.<br /><br />Khurshid’s remarks came close on the heels of the prime minister terming “deplorable” the ill treatment of the diplomat in New York. “This is deplorable,” he told reporters inside Parliament.<br /><br />The prime minister’s remarks on the issue came soon after the government asserted in Parliament that India will take strong steps to ensure the return of the 39-year-old diplomat, who was arrested, and the restoration of her dignity.<br /><br />In Parliament, Khurshid condemned the US action and said he will not return to the House if he fails in his responsibility to bring back Khobragade, adding that “the government is determined to protect dignity of the diplomat”.<br /></p>
