<p>Chennai: Avalanche lake in the picturesque Nilgiris district has received a whooping 93.7 cm of rainfall since May 24 even as rains continue unabated in the region due to early intensification of the Southwest Monsoon.</p><p>Several localities in the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Kanyakumari, Theni, and Tirunelveli districts in the Western Ghats too received extremely heavy rainfall with Mukurthy Dam and Parson Valley near Ooty recording 24.5 and 21.5 cm rainfall respectively in 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Tuesday. </p><p>Avalanche, which is home to a scenic lake in the Nilgiris, received 25.6 cm rainfall at 8.30 am on Tuesday, while the rainfall recorded on May 26, May 25, and May 24 are 35.3 cm, 21.5 cm, and 11.3 cm respectively. The locality has been prone to extreme weather conditions for the past few years with many attributing it to climate change. </p><p>Several tourist places in the Nilgiris district remained off bounds for tourists for the second day on Tuesday due to heavy rains lashing the region. The district administration asked tourists to remain inside their hotels and not step out to adverse weather conditions even as rains continued for the fourth day on Tuesday. </p>.Avalanche alert issued for high altitude areas in Himachal.<p>The MeT department issued an orange alert to Coimbatore and Nilgiris districts on May 28, while ghat areas of Tirunelveli, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Theni, Tenkasi and Kanyakumari districts have been placed on yellow alert.</p><p>"Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, and Theni have received very good rains now as the monsoon clouds breach the ghat areas and give rains to the leeward side too. Good numbers can be expected from Kanyakumari and Nellai ghat areas today,” independent weather blogger Pradeep John said. </p><p>“South Kerala region is also receiving good rains. Avalanche and Parsons Valley might report another 200 mm+ rainfall,” he added. </p><p>Nilgiris has been experiencing extremely heavy rainfall and extreme temperatures in summer and winter for the past few years. The number of adverse weather events in the ecologically-sensitive district has also increased owing to the effects of climate change.</p><p>Meanwhile, Chennai and its suburbs experienced surprise showers on Tuesday evening. John said the rains will be very gusty with no thunder or lightning. “Enjoy the gusty and showery fast moving short spell,” he said. </p>
