<p>Chennai: Five women, who were sitting on the side of the road after letting their cows graze in the field, were crushed to death by a speeding car driven by a college student on the Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) on Wednesday afternoon. </p><p>All the four occupants of the car were students at a private university near Panaiyur in Thiruporur and had gone out to have lunch, police said. </p><p>The women, identified as Anthaayi, Logammal, Yasodha, Vijaya, and Gowri, all aged between 52 and 71, were sitting on the corner of the road and relaxing when a speeding car hit them, killing all five instantly. </p><p>“The incident took place at around 2.20 pm and the car was proceeding towards Mahabalipuram from Thiruporur. We have detained all four occupants of the car,” a senior police officer told <em>DH</em>.</p>.One more Tamil Nadu worker dies in landslides, CM announces solatium.<p>While locals alleged that the students were “drunk”, the police officer said a medical examination of the occupants of the car involved in the accident was under way. “We will know whether they were in an inebriated condition only after the medical examination is completed,” the officer added. </p><p>All women hailed from one street Paiyanaur village in the area and has returned to oversee their cows after having lunch at home. “It is shocking to know that they have been crushed to death by a car. We saw them returning to the field at around 2 pm,” a villager said. </p><p>Villagers complained that over-speeding of cars on the OMR also known as IT corridor is a major problem for them especially when it comes to crossing the road. “Most cars that ply on this road run at a break-neck speed. They don’t stop or reduce the speed even if the driver sees people waiting to cross the road. This is a major problem here,” a woman said.</p><p>Chief Minister <a href="https://www.deccanherald.com/tags/m-k-stalin">M K Stalin </a>condoled the death of the five women and announced a solatium of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased.</p><p>Speeding cars are a common feature on the OMR and East Coast Road (ECR) that connects Chennai with Mamallapuram and Puducherry. Several two-wheelers have been impounded and action taken against riders for wheeling and other stunts on the busy road.</p>
