TVK office set on fire in Tamil Nadu days before counting, CCTV captures two suspects

Chennai: A local office of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) was vandalised and set on fire in Tamil Nadu’s Srirangam on Thursday night, just days before the Assembly election results are due on May 4, police said.

CCTV footage from the area shows two men stopping outside the office, entering the premises and leaving shortly after. By Friday morning, posters of the party and its chief, actor-turned-politician Vijay, were found torn.

Police said no injuries were reported and the damage was limited. “It is a small office and the loss appears minimal. Two individuals are suspected to have set the place on fire. We are also looking into how the fire was started,” a Srirangam police official said.

A case is yet to be registered as the party has not filed a formal complaint so far, officials added.

The incident comes at a time when several exit polls suggest a strong debut for TVK in the state.

An Axis My India survey has projected the party could win between 98 and 120 seats in the 234-member Assembly.

Other estimates are more conservative, with Today’s Chanakya placing TVK in the 52–74 range and Kamakhya Analytics forecasting 67–81 seats.

Tamil Nadu went to polls in a single phase on April 23, recording a turnout of 85.14 per cent. Counting will take place on May 4.

Meanwhile, TVK candidate N Marie Wilson said Vijay has instructed party nominees to be present at counting centres early on result day and remain alert throughout.

He added that candidates were told to stay close to the process and ensure strict monitoring until counting concludes.
