The driver, who was allegedly transporting gutka and liquor illegally, was arrested after nearly 4-km chase

A car driver, who was allegedly transporting gutka and liquor illegally, attempted to run over a police head constable during a vehicle inspection on the Bengaluru-Hosur highway near the Zuzuvadi check post in Tamil Nadu. He hit the head constable with the car and drove nearly 4 km with the policeman clinging to the bonnet.

The incident took place on Sunday evening at the Zuzuvadi check post near Hosur on the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border when a team from Hudco police station was checking vehicles.

According to the police, the accused has been identified as Yarab Pasha (34). When police attempted to stop the vehicle for checking, he allegedly refused to stop and tried to escape from the spot. At that moment, head constable Rajeev Gandhi, who was stationed at the check post, moved in front of the car to stop it. Instead of stopping, the driver allegedly attempted to drive the car forward towards the policeman and escape. In an attempt to save himself, the head constable grabbed onto the car’s bonnet while Pasha continued to drive with him hanging on, even as other vehicles were passing on the busy highway.

A police team led by inspector Syed Mubarak chased the vehicle. The car was finally intercepted near the Hosur Dargah area with help from members of the public, according to reports.

The police said the accused again tried to run over officers while attempting to escape in the area. However, the car hit a parapet and the head constable, who was still holding onto the bonnet, suffered a fracture in his leg, according to a Times of India report.

Pasha was subsequently arrested. The police recovered around 390 kg of gutka along with liquor, with the total value of the seized items estimated at Rs 2.2 lakh. The police said that gutka and liquor were being smuggled illegally from Karnataka into Tamil Nadu.

The entire incident was captured on the dashcam of another vehicle.
