Farmers from Peda Dhanwada and ten other surrounding villages have been opposing the proposed ethanol plant, but the factory's promoters quietly transported construction materials to the site on Tuesday night to begin work.</p><p>Angered by this development, villagers gathered in large numbers on Wednesday and stormed the construction site. They dismantled the makeshift arrangements and torched a container. The farmers fear that besides losing their livelihood, the ethanol plant will destroy the local environment and ecology.</p><p>Gayathri Renewable Fuels & Allied Industries has planned to set up a new grain-based distillery with a capacity of 200 KLPD at Pedda Dhanwada village in Rajoli tehsil of Jogulamba Gadwal district. The proposed unit will spread over 19.17 acres of land and will also include the installation of a 4.5 MW co-generation power plant. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has accorded environmental clearance (EC) for the project.</p><p>Sources from local police said the ethanol unit, categorised as a renewable energy project, does not require Gram Sabha consent under existing norms.</p>
