UP woman dramatically poses as 'ichchadhari nagin' to elope with lover, leaves snake's slough and bangle pieces behind

She eloped with her lover leaving behind a snake’s slough, a few pieces of bangles and vermillion on her bed apparently to make her family members think that she had turned into a ‘wishful serpent’ and vanished.

Lucknow: A recent incident from Uttar Pradesh's Auraiya appears to be taken straight out of a typical Indian soap opera, where a woman and her lover intended to trick the unsuspecting family members by posing as a ‘wishful serpent’ (ichchadhari nagin).

The woman staged a drama of turning into a ‘wishful serpent’ (ichchadhari nagin), allegedly to elope with her lover and avoid being married off to some other man.

Being identified as a resident of a village in the Phamphood area, she had been in love with a man from the same village but their relationship was not approved of by her family. Meanwhile, her parents had started looking for a groom to marry her off.

The woman then devised a plan to fool her family members. She then eloped with her lover leaving behind a snake’s slough, a few pieces of bangles and vermillion on her bed apparently to make her family members think that she had turned into a ‘wishful serpent’ and vanished.

As the rumour spread, the locals made a beeline before her residence and soon many others began to perform rituals and offer prayers reportedly to ‘protect’ their families from what they thought was a ‘curse’.

Initial investigation by the police, which reached the village on getting the information, revealed that the woman had an affair with a man from the same village but their families were opposed to the relationship.

Police said that the woman had enacted the drama to elope with her lover and avoid being married off to someone else.

A case was registered in this regard and efforts were on to trace the woman, police said.
