<p>Tehatta: Hundreds of people thronged the narrow lanes of Tehatta village in West Bengal's Nadia district on Saturday to pay their last respects to Armyman Havildar Jhantu Ali Sheikh, whose mortal remains were brought to his native village.</p><p>Sheikh laid down his life during an anti-terror operation in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district.</p><p>His sacrifice was honoured with a wreath-laying ceremony at the 166 Military Hospital in Jammu on Friday, where senior officials of the Army, CRPF, BSF, and Jammu and Kashmir Police paid their final respects.</p> .Army soldier dies after being hit by bullet fired from his service rifle in J&K.<p>His mortal remains were brought to Kolkata on Friday night and then to Barrackpore before being taken to his native Tehatta Patharghata village early Saturday, an official said.</p><p>The body, wrapped in the tricolour, reached his home at around 8 am.</p><p>As the body arrived in the village, a large number of people, irrespective of caste, creed, and religion, gathered on both sides of the lanes, rooftops and balconies to bid farewell to their hero.</p><p>Emotions ran high as Sheikh's family, inconsolable in their grief, received the coffin.</p><p>A stage was set up near a local mosque where the mortal remains were placed, allowing residents to pay their last respects.</p><p>His niece, Amina Sheikh, said that six bullets had hit the martyr's body—one injuring his throat and ear, another hitting his ear and head, while the rest four struck his back as the firing took place from the rear.</p> .<p>Before the final rites, Army personnel arranged for bathing the body. During this time, female family members were not allowed near the site as per protocol, she said.</p><p>The national flag draped over the coffin was later folded and handed over to his wife by Army personnel.</p><p>The burial took place near his home around 11.45 am, she added.</p><p>His wife demanded justice. "Those responsible for his death must be punished," she said.</p><p>West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed deep sorrow over the soldier's death and pledged all possible support to his bereaved family.</p> .<p>"The entire state stands by the family of Jhantu Ali Sheikh. His sacrifice will never be forgotten," the CM said.</p><p>Local administration officials and representatives from the armed forces also reached the village to offer condolences and support to the grieving family.</p><p>Jhantu is survived by his wife, a 10-year-old son and a 6-year-old daughter. </p>
