Record number of women elected to Finland parliament

The women now constitute 43 percent of the total 200 MPs, Xinhua reported citing local media. Finnish women won the right to vote and be elected in 1906. In 1907, 19 women became the first women MPs in Finland.

Finland was the first country in the world to have women MPs. The country has had the highest proportion of women MPs in the world for years. In 2003, 75 women were elected MPs. In 2007, the number of women MPs increased to 84, accounting for 42 percent of the total number.
