Kids of Kodagu flood victims attend schools at Sampaje

Prathima, a Class 9 student of Madenadu High School near Madikeri who has taken shelter at Sampaje School, is now happy that she can continue her studies.

After the closure of Sampaje Ghat Road connecting Madikeri and Sullia on August 11, she could not attend the school. Now, she can continue her studies in the school near to the relief centre.

The children of flood victims from Jodupala, Madenadu, Arekal, and surrounding areas who have been taking shelter at the three relief centres at Sampaje and Aranthodu are provided education in the nearby schools.

Speaking to DH, Thekkila Community Centre Relief Camp Nodal Officer Veerappa Gowda said, “Arrangements have been made for 48 children from the camp to attend the schools. Eighteen children are attending the primary school, nine children will attend Sampaje High School as the classes will start from Friday. The kindergarten children are sent to three schools at Goonadka. Further, the college students continue their studies at Sullia.”

Kallugundi Relief Centre Nodal Officer Devaraj said 34 children from the camp go to schools. All the children have been given books and uniforms as well.

Further, 30 families from Devarakallu, which were residing in Thekkila camp, have left for their respective residences on Thursday.

“The family members had visited their house on Wednesday to ascertain the condition of the houses. In addition, experts from GSI and tahsildars too have made a random check of these houses to ensure that they are safe. We have collected a letter from the family stating that the house is safe for living,” the officer said.

From Kallugundi camp, five families from Koinadu have left for their houses, after the experts and individuals inspected the condition of the houses for living. The families were given 25 kg rice, household items and Rs 3,600 in cash while leaving, the officer added.
