The sixth Additional District and Sessions Court on Saturday awarded life imprisonment to a man and his girlfriend on charges of murder.

It has also slapped a fine of Rs 25,000 each.

The accused Ranga, alias Gavi Ranga alias Harish, from Tumakuru and his girlfriend Sushma Prescilla, a resident of Karnad in Mulki, were found guilty of murdering Avinash, a resident of Bola in Karkala.

Sushma was employed in an IT services company and Harish was working as a cab driver. Avinash and Sushma had an affair in 2014. Over a period of time, Sushma distanced herself from him and started loving Harish.

Harish and Sushma hatched a plan to murder Avinash. On April 1, 2014, Sushma asked Avinash to meet her near Mukka check post. As Avinash reached Pavanje bridge, Harish rammed Avinash’s two-wheeler with his vehicle. Avinash later died in the hospital.

The court has asked the accused to pay Rs 40,000 to the father of the deceased. If the accused fail to pay the fine, then they would have to undergo two months of simple imprisonment. The judge in his order said that the victim’s father can submit an application seeking additional compensation to the district legal services authority.
