Obese children have a high risk of chronic health conditions, such as asthma, sleep apnea, bone and joint problems. Apart from these, there is a rise in cases of type 2 diabetes in children who are overweight. Diabetes in children can even lead to heart disease and kidney failure. Obesity in children not only hampers their physical activities but also their self-esteem and emotional wellness.</p>.<p>The rise in obesity in children can be attributed to unhealthy eating, lack of physical activity, insufficient sleep, excessive screen time and study pressure. Obese children should not be put on a weight reduction diet without consulting the doctor. Here are a few helpful pointers:</p>.<p>• Don’t limit their food intake, rather ensure they develop healthy eating habits.</p>.<p>• Give them plenty of fruits and vegetables with whole-grain products every day.</p>.<p>• Use only low-fat and non-fat milk and dairy products.</p>.<p>• Add lean meat, fish, lentils, beans and cereals for protein.</p>.<p>• Increase their water intake.</p>.<p>• Children should participate in at least 60 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity regularly. Start exercising and encourage your child to join you.</p>.<p>• Make food interesting. An attractive presentation of the food is as important as cooking a healthy meal. Chop the vegetables into interesting shapes that are attractive to see.</p>.<p>• If your child insists on eating fast food, modify the recipe to make them healthy. Use whole grains instead of refined ones. Use brown bread instead of white bread.
