Survivor says he could escape as he was sleeping near the door, others were not so lucky

On Sunday morning, 32-year-old Firoz Khan woke up to flames engulfing the room where he was sleeping along with his fellow workers in a building in Anaj Mandi.

Khan, who is among the survivors of the deadly blaze which killed 43 persons, said he was sleeping near the door and managed to escape along with few others after alerting the inmates about the fire.

Anaj Mandi fire: Building did not have fire clearance from Delhi Fire Service, say officials

"This was bound to happen, you go and see the situation inside, there are live wires. Maximum people were from Purvanchal and Bihar, there were people from Madhubani and Darbhanga. It is a complete failure of power department,"Bihar Minister Sanjay Jha said.

The forensic team who arrived at the incident spot have taken necessary samples from the second and third floor of the building that caught on fire, according to a News18 tweet.

PM Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakhs each from Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for next of kin of those who have lost their lives due to tragic fire in Delhi. PM has also approved Rs 50,000 each for those seriously injured in the fire.

A short circuit resulted in the fire: Hardeep Singh Puri

"A short circuit resulted in the fire. There are no deaths due to burning as of now.We will go into details of the incident and guilty won’t be spared," said Union Ministerof Housing and Urban Affairs,Hardeep Singh Puri, to News18.

"One injured person has received more than 50% burns, 8 others admitted to hospital due to smoke inhalation. Around 15 people are injured in the incident," said Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal in his visit to theLNJP Hospital. (ANI)

The Delhi government on Sunday ordered a probe into the fire incident in Anaj Mandi area here and sought a detailed report within seven days.

Revenue Minister Kailash Gahlot directed the district magistrate (central) to conduct an inquiry and submit a report within seven days.

"43 people dead, injured admitted to LNJP & Lady Hardinge hospitals. Prima facie it appears short circuit caused fire. Plastic material at the spot caused a lot of smoke. Case transferred to Crime Branch, forensics team to arrive at the spot soon," saysMS Randhawa, PRO Delhi Police.

Delhi Anaj Mandi Fire accident: Until Now

-A fire broke out in the wee hours of the morning in Delhi's Anaj Mandi in Rani Jhansi Road, today, a residential area.

-Several labourers were trapped inside a factory located in the area. The fire department received a call 5.22 am and 30 fire tenders were rushed to the spot immediately.

-The NDRF also reached the incident spot later in the morning.

-At least 43 people lost their lives in the accident.

-Almost 50 have been rescued according to Atul Garg, Chief Fire Officer, Delhi Fire Service. Those who were rescued were taken to the LNJP hospital.

-Prime minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, President Ram Nath Kovind, Congress leaders Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, expressed their condolences to those who were affected by the incident.

-Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal arrived at the incident spot and said, "It is a very sad incident. I have ordered a magisterial inquiry into it. Compensation Rs 10 lakhs each to be given to families of those dead and Rs 1 lakh each to those injured. The expense of medical treatment of those injured to be borne by the government."

Congress president Sonia Gandhi expresses deepest condolences to families of those killed in Delhi factory fire; urges govt authorities to provide all assistance to victims and their kin.

"Expressing her deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of over four dozen deceased in the tragic accident, Gandhi hoped that maximum lives will be saved and those injured are treated expeditiously," a party statement told PTI.

She urged authorities of central and state governments to provide every assistance to victims and their families.

Gandhi also asked Congress leaders and workers to assist the authorities in every manner possible.

Delhi CM announces Rs 10 lakh as compensation for the dead people's families and Rs 1 lakh for those who are injured. He also said that all the cost for treatment will be taken up by the government.

He said that the investigations to find out the person responsible for the fire are underway, and strict action will be taken against them [the accused].

"It's a sad incident. As per initial info, fire broke out due to short circuit.BJP will provide financial assistance of Rs5 lakhs each to families of those who have lost their lives&Rs25000 to injured," said BJP MP from North East Delhi, Manoj Tiwari when he visited theDelhi fire incident site.

"The condition of those injured is not serious, have been kept under observation. 34 people were brought dead to the hospital," saysKishore Singh, Medical Director, Lok Nayak Hospital, Delhi.

"Deaths have been mostly due to smoke inhalation and suffocation," he said. (ANI)

Many people trapped inside were rescued and rushed to RML Hospital, LNJP and Hindu Rao Hospital, fire officials said.

Thirty-four people were brought dead to LNJP hospital and smoke inhalation was the primary cause of the death. Some of the bodies were charred, Dr Kishore Singh, Medical Superintendent, LNJP, said.

Out of the 15 injured brought to LNJP, nine people are under observation and others have partial injuries, he told PTI.

Manoj (23), a resident of Begusarai in Bihar, said his brother Naveen (18) was working in a handbag manufacturing unit operating from the premises.

"I got a call from his friend informing that he has been injured in the incident. I have no clue which hospital he has been taken to," he told PTI.

According to an unidentified elderly man whose three nephews were working in the factory, "At least 12-15 machines were installed in the unit. I have no idea about the factory owner.

"My nephews Mohammed Imran and Ikramuddin were inside the factory. I don't know their whereabouts," the man said.

According to him, many units were operating from the premises which was located in a congested area. (PTI)
