A captain's knock from Williamson

So the World Cup finally saw some action after a pretty drab two weeks. The last game which had this much drama also involved New Zealand, as they overcame Bangladesh but this victory will surely be sweeter. It was a difficult batting pitch and with Morris bowling a dream spell, the task became even tougher. But the Kiwis had a saviour in their captain fantastic, Kane Williamson, and he was ably aided by his support staff of Martin Guptill, Jimmy Neesham and Colin de Grandhomme.

Rabada got rid of Munro quickly and then Guptill and Williamson put on a good stand to steady the ship. The former then lost his wicket in the strangest possible way, stepping on his stumps while swivelling and then NZ lost Ross Taylor and Tom Latham to be in deep trouble at 80/4. But Jimmy Neesham joined his skipper at the crease to weather the storm and put on a 50-run stand, before getting out to a needless cut. de Grandhomme then came in and started to counter-attack, helping himself to a good fifty and put on 91 runs with Williamson to almost seal the game for NZ before getting out at the death.

And all through this, Williamson stood like a rock, playing each delivery with perfection, be it a dab down to third man, which he did aplenty, or a pull away to square leg. He had some luck along the way with de Kock not appealing for a clear edge and a couple of chances falling short of the Proteas fielders but that cannot take away what was a tremendous effort to stick it out for almost the entirety of the innings to seal a hundred with his first six of the game to effectively win the game for his side. He will cherish this win for a long time to come surely.

It has been an absolute pleasure to get you updates from a thriller of a game, which is what this WC needed to liven it up a bit. Do join us tomorrow as Australia take on Bangladesh. Till then, goodbye and goodnight!

NZ 245/6 (48.3 overs)

Andile to bowl the last over. 8 needed, can he defend it? Or can the skipper lead NZ to a famous victory? We'll find out soon enough. Gould sends back Duminy to the dug out, as he tried to come on for Ngidi. Plenty of discussions going on between Faf, Andile and Tahir. Long conference and it is very much understandable, this game is on tenterhooks!

48.1 Phehlukwayo to Santner, 1 run, slower short ball, pulled away to deep mid wicket. Kane back on strike, he is on 96!

48.2 Phehlukwayo to Williamson, SIX, you beauty! What a time to hit your first six! Knows it will be a slower ball, sat back deep, it came as expected and he literally slog sweeps this into the deep mid wicket stands! That is his hundred too!

48.3 Phehlukwayo to Williamson, FOUR, cut away past point and it is all over! NZ win

NZ 234/6 (48 overs)

47.1 Ngidi to de Grandhomme, OUT, is there a twist in the tale now? Off cutter outside off, he launches this, wanted to go over long off but Faf takes a good diving catch well in frontof the boundary to give South Africa some hope here

de Grandhomme c Du Plessis b Ngidi 60(47)

Mitchell Santner is the man in at no.8 and he can certainly strike them

47.2 Ngidi to Williamson, DOT, drops just in front of him! Off cutter again, Kane chips it in the air, it falls just short of a diving Ngidi on his follow through

47.3 Ngidi to Williamson, 1 run, comes down the track and chips it over the bowler this time for a single

47.4 Ngidi to Santner, DOT, off pace delivery yet again, goes past Mitch's cut and on the bounce to de Kock

47.5 Ngidi to Santner, 1 run, cross batted down the ground, strikes the stumps at the opposite end and deflects to long off

47.6 Ngidi to Williamson, FOUR, excellent! Off pace again, Kane guides this through vacant slip and it runs away past short third man for four. Wow, what batting!

NZ 228/5 (47 overs)

46.1 Rabada to de Grandhomme, 1 run, wide of off, played to deep point

46.2 Rabada to Williamson, DOT, pacy delivey dropped back of a length, Kane hops up as he was surprised but defends well. May have caught his glove a little

46.3 Rabada to Williamson, DOT, hops up again to defend this to point

46.4 Rabada to Williamson, 1 run, steered to third man, he has done this so many times today, it is unbelieveable

46.5 Rabada to de Grandhomme, DOT, wanted to guide it down but there is a short third man in place for that shot

46.6 Rabada to de Grandhomme, 1 run.
