Parliament Live: Rajya Sabha passes UAPA Amendment Bill

Rajya Sabha on Friday held a vote on provisions in Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Bill. On Wednesday, the upper house passed the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, 2019. In Lok Sabha, Inter-State River Water Disputes (Amendment) Bill, 2019, was passed. The Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Amendment Bill, 2019 was also passed in the lower house. On Tuesday, the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019 was passed. On Friday, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act(UAPA) Amendment Bill passed in Rajya Sabha.

'This will lead to large-scale harassment and injustice'

Opposition parties on Friday slammed the amendment to the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act which will empower the government to declare individuals as terrorists, saying the new law was "draconian" and could be misused against anyone opposed to the ruling establishment.

The Parliament on Friday approved an amendment to the anti-terror law to give powers to the central government to designate an individual as a terrorist and seize his properties.

While Lok Sabha had passed the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Bill, 2019 that seeks to amend the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 on July 24, Rajya Sabha approved it by voice vote on Friday after rejecting an opposition-sponsored motion to send it to select committee.

Rajya Sabha rejected the opposition-sponsored motion to send the amendment to select committee with 104 votes against it as compared to 85 in favour.

The House passed the amendment to the law with 147 votes in favour and 42 against it.
