As much as we enjoy the monsoons after the searing heat, there are some allergies we have to watch out for. There is a rise in the incidence of asthma during monsoon because of a higher concentration of mould spores in the environment. Evidence also suggests that the incidence of allergic rhinitis and skin allergy also increases after rains. Symptoms like sneezing, runny or blocked nose with or without wheezing and breathlessness can cause weakness.
Let’s look at the factors that cause monsoon allergies and ways to prevent them:
House dust mites
These microscopic insects breed in household dust and flourish at 16°C to 24°C. Washing clothes at higher temperatures can tackle this problem.
Mould spores
Spores are released when there is a sudden rise in temperature in a moist environment.
Most patients are treated with tablets, skin creams, nasal sprays, and inhalers. However, the symptoms recur once the medication is stopped. A new treatment called allergen-specific immunotherapy enhances the body’s tolerance to allergens.
