Bengaluru: BJP has successfully retained all the three Lok Sabha constituencies in Bengaluru yet again.

Bangalore South, hailed as a strong BJP bastion where Union minister late Ananth Kumar won six times continuously, has a winner in the form of Tejasvi Surya registering an astounding victory in his maiden election.

Upsetting the political calculations and social engineering strategy of the coalition parties, Union Minister D V Sadananda Gowda has yet again been voted to the parliament from Bangalore North.

Bangalore Central segment, which was on the verge of slipping to Congress, swung in favour of BJP’s P C Mohan giving him a hat-trick victory at last.

The state’s ruling coalition of Congress and JD(S) which took Bengaluru seats casually till the last minute to finalise their candidates suffered a rude shock as voters supported the BJP.

Bangalore North had posed a considerable challenge for the saffron brigade with seven out of the eight constituencies represented by Congress-JD(S) MLAs. Sadananda Gowda was often chided by the opposition for his ‘poor’ performance and teased for his smiling face. Surfing high on the Modi wave, Sadananda Gowda effortlessly registered a resounding victory over state minister Krishna Byre Gowda (Congress).

Keeping the party workers on their toes till the last minute, BJP fielded lesser known young face Tejasvi Surya in Bangalore South.

Silences critics

The very fact that BJP president Amit Shah and Modi personally selected Surya for the election prompted the party workers to reach out to the voters. He has given a fitting reply to his critics by winning with a massive lead of 3.31 lakh votes.

Congress candidate B K Hariprasad, who had burnt his fingers 20 years ago in the same constituency, was hopeful of wresting the seat from BJP.

Even though Hariprasad had every chance to cash in on the BJP leaders’ indifference over the selection of the candidate, he failed to convert that into his favour as the party
had a poor network at the booth level.

Bangalore Central witnessed a high-pitched battle. Despite his simplicity and accessibility, BJP’s P C Mohan found it tough to retain his bastion with victory evading him till the last minute. He faced tough competition by Congress’ Rizwan Arshad and actor-independent Prakash Raj.

Mahadevpura to rescue

He heaved a sigh of relief when the votes of Mahadevapura Assembly constituency gave him the much-needed lead over Arshad. Mohan’s works like developing Hoody Railway Station entirely out of his MPLAD funds, working aggressively to set up a railway terminal at Baiyappanahalli, lobbying intensely for the execution of suburban rail project and taking the people’s voice to the centre changed the fortune in his favour.

Despite the dominant presence of Muslims and challenge of preventing Prakash Raj from tapping into his fortress, he banked on Modi factor to connect with millennial voters and successfully registered a victory for the third time at last.
