KCR's daughter Kavitha loses, BJP, Congress shine

Last Updated 23 May 2019, 14:27 IST

The slogan of K Chandrasekhar Rao calling on voters to elect TRS candidates in 16 Lok Sabha segments in the state so that he can play an important role at the centre seems to have backfired. The TRS was limited to 9 seats as compared to 11 seats it won in 2014.

In a major shock, Rao’s daughter Kalvakuntla Kavitha lost at the hands of BJP candidate Dharmapuri Aravind by a margin of 68,000 votes. Nizamabad attracted nationwide attention when 178 turmeric farmers contested as independents from the Lok Sabha segment to highlight their demand of the Turmeric Board and remunerative prices.

In Secunderabad, Lok Sabha segment BJP leader Kishan Reddy won by a massive majority of over 60,000 votes. BJP also won the crucial Karimnagar seat from Vinod Kumar, a close aide of KCR. The BJP is also leading in the Adilabad Lok Sabha segment.

While Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, a senior Congress leader, won from Nalgonda, TPCC chief Capt Uttam Kumar Reddy in Miryalaguda and A Revanth Reddy in Malkajigiri were also leading.

Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen President Asaduddin Owaisi got a ballot round scare from BJP candidate Dr Bhagavanth Rao, but later found his regular tempo to get back his lead in the subsequent rounds and won by a massive margin.

On the other hand, the mood at the BJP and Congress state headquarters here is upbeat. The parties, which were driven to the wall by the ruling TRS in the past, are rejoicing the comeback. The ruling TRS maintained its superiority in Medak District with its candidate Kotha Prabhakar Reddy winning the election with over 5.70 lakh votes.
