Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's quite well known stubborn character and adamant stands are under attack after the left front's fiasco in the Lok Sabha polls.

While issues like Kerala left front government's stand on Sabarimala women entry, alleged lapses in the post-flood rehabilitation and anti-incumbency factors were considered to be the key factors for the left front's poor show in the polls, the stubborn character of Vijayan is also widely stated to be a reason.

There were occasions in which Vijayan, who is a senior CPM leader even at the national level, rudely asking the media to 'get out' while covering some important meetings and even asking media persons to 'keep away' while his reactions were sought on various sensitive issues. Moreover, Vijayan is also widely criticised of not even listening to the woes of the people, whether genuine or not, on instances like mass protest against land acquisition for development work.

At many instances, Vijayan's stubborn stature was flayed even as an arrogance, which was highly unbecoming of a Chief Minister. On the Sabarimala women entry issue also, Mr. Vijayan's stubborn stand to implement the Supreme Court order allowing women of all ages to the Ayyappa temple and the state police even providing protection to women activists who turned up to the temple were widely flayed as Mr. Vijayan's adamant stature, especially since not all court orders were implemented with such haste.

Even as several CPM sympathisers and political commentators openly held Vijayan's adamant stature responsible for the people's mandate against the left-front, Vijayan seems to be in no mood even for an introspection. Speaking to the media on Saturday, Vijayan firmly said that there was no question of changing his character. "I have grown to this level with this character only. Hence there is not need to change it," he had said.

Senior political commentator B R P Bhaskar told DH that Vijayan's stubborn stature was known to the people of Kerala for quite long time, ever since he was a CPM state secretary in Kerala. However, a party secretary maintaining a stubborn stature and a Chief Minister maintaining stubborn stature obviously make lot of difference.

The left-front won only at one out of the 20 Lok Sabha seat in Kerala. A close look into the election results will also reveal that out of the 140 assembly segments in Kerala, the left-front candidates could not get the lead at over 120 assembly segments.
