Days after blessing Prime Minister Narendra Modi to return to power again after the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, Samajwadi Party (SP) patron Mulayam Singh Yadav on Monday said that the Opposition parties would win the general elections.

Mulayam, who filed his nomination papers from Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat on Monday, evaded a direct reply when queried if he would like to see BSP supremo Mayawati as the next prime minister.

The SP patron told reporters that the SP-BSP-RLD alliance would "sweep" the polls in Uttar Pradesh.

"We are going to win the elections," he remarked.

Mulayam, however, made clear that he was not in the race for the prime minister's post, in the event of an Opposition victory.

"The next PM will be decided after the election results," he replied in response to a question.

Incidentally, Mulayam's son and SP president Akhilesh Yadav had also evaded a reply on whether he would like to see Mayawati as the next prime minister.

"I can say that the next PM will be from UP," he had said.

On whether he would be sharing a stage with Mayawati in the SP-BSP joint election rally at Mainpuri on April 19, Mulayam said that only Akhilesh could say about it.

Mulayam, who had won from both Mainpuri and Azamgarh Lok Sabha seats in the 2014 polls, had later resigned from Mainpuri and retained Azamgarh.

Later, his grand-nephew Tej Pratap Singh had won the seat in the bypoll.
