Muslim parents name newborn after Modi

A Muslim couple in Uttar Pradesh's Gonda district, about 200 kilometres from here, was so impressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's victory in the just-concluded Lok Sabha elections that they decided to name their newborn after the latter.

According to the reports, a male child was born to Mainaz Begum, a resident of Wazirganj locality in the town, on Thursday, the day the counting of votes was taken up.

A big fan of Modi, Mainaz, whose husband Mushtaq Ahmed worked in a Gulf country, told her in-laws that she wanted to name her child after the prime minister.

Apprehending that the Muslim community might not favour naming the child after Modi, her father-in-law Mohammed Idris reportedly asked her to go for some common Muslim name.

Mainaz, however, remained adamant and the matter ultimately reached her husband abroad. Mushtaq gave in to his wife's request and the child was named Narendra Damodardas Modi.

She said that she had submitted an affidavit to this effect with the district magistrate's office intimating about the name of the child. The name of the newborn would soon be included in the family register, officials said in Gonda.

On being asked if he apprehended opposition from the Muslim community members in this matter, Idris said: "It is our wish and desire....it has nothing do with religion or politics..why should anyone object."
