Poll-O-Meter: Percentage of voters down due to violence

The 1971 election campaign saw violent incidents, particularly between various Left parties.

However, it was not widespread. Apart from the Congress’ victory, the election results showed a great increase in abstentions compared with previous polls.

The number of voters increased by more than 2.3 crores between 1967 and 1971, but there were 30 lakh fewer voters in 1971 than in 1967, bringing the percentage of voters down from 61.32% to 55.25%.
