Contrary to speculations, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra may not contest the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls.

Instead, she will focus on campaigning and strengthening the party organisation in Uttar Pradesh.

Priyanka dropped the hint at her marathon meetings in Lucknow with party workers, who had come from different Lok Sabha constituencies in the eastern region, which continued throughout Tuesday night.

''Priyankaji said that she was not interested in contesting elections... She said she wanted to strengthen the party organisation,'' a Congress office bearer, from Phulpur LS constituency, said.

Priyanka's response came, when the party leaders urged her to contest from Phulpur, which was represented by her great grand father and India's first prime minister Jawahar Lal Nehru.

It was being speculated that Priyanka could contest from her mother Sonia Gandhi's LS constituency, Raebareli, or even contest against Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Varanasi.

Later, the Congress' star campaigner told reporters in an informal chat on Wednesday that it would not be her but party president Rahul Gandhi, who would be ''fighting'' Narendra Modi.

''Rahul will be fighting Modi,'' she replied to a query.

On her husband Robert Vadra's questioning by the ED, Priyanka said that these things would go on but she would do her work.

''Ye sab to chalta rahega... Main apna kaam karungi,'' (these things will go on, I will do my work), she said.

She said that she was seeking the opinions of grass-root level workers and local leaders about the party's electoral prospects.

According to the state Congress sources Priyanka's meeting with party workers, office bearers, that began on Tuesday noon, continued till Wednesday dawn.

The workers said that Priyanka sought information about the organisation at booth, block and district levels and also sought to know from them about the candidates from their constituencies.

Priyanka, who was also the in-charge of the eastern region, would be focusing on 41 LS seats in the region while party MP Jyotiraditya Scindia, who was in-charge of the western region, would be holding meetings with workers from 39 LS seats. UP has in all 80 LS seats.
