Shock for LDF in Kasargod

UDF candidate Rajmohan Unnithan wrested the Kasargod Lok Sabha constituency from LDF after a gap of 35 years. Unnithan won against LDF candidate K P Sathischandran by 40,438 votes.

Rajmohan secured 4,74,961 votes while Sathischandran secured 4,34,523. The NDA candidate Ravish Tantri had to content himself in the third position by polling 1,76,049 votes in his favour.

Kasargod constituency had been CPM's stronghold for the last 35 years. It was in 1984 that Congress candidate I Rama Rai had won against CPM candidate E Balanandan by a margin of 11,369 votes. In 1984, Rama Rai had got 2,62,904 votes while Balanandan had secured 2,51,535 votes.

In 1971 and 1977, Congress candidate Kadannappalli Ramachandran had won the election. When the Congress was divided, Ramachandran had joined Congress (S) and is now serving as the minister in LDF government in Kerala.

In the 1971 election, Ramachandran had defeated CPM's E K Nayanar and in 1977, he had defeated CPM's M Ramanna Rai.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha election, LDF candidate P Karunakaran had defeated Congress candidate T Siddiq by a margin of 6,921 votes.
