Tharoor seeks probe into Tulabharam balance collapse

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has sought a probe into the collapse of weighing balance during 'Tulabharam' ritual at a temple in Thiruvananthapuram, even as the initial police inquiry ruled out any chances of sabotage.

Tharoor, who suffered a head injury after a heavy metal portion of the balance fell on his head on Monday, told reporters after being discharged from hospital on Tuesday that he was hearing it for the first time that the weighing balance of the Tulabharam collapsing and hence he seeking a probe.

Meanwhile, the Thiruvananthapuram city police conducted a preliminary inquiry on the basis of a complaint filed by the District Congress Committee and found that the balance might have collapsed due to wear and tear and there was no evidence of sabotage.

The temple authorities had earlier blamed Congress workers for mishandling the balance, which led to the collapse.

The incident took place at Gandhari Amman Devi temple in Thiruvananthapuram city.

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitaraman, who came down to Thiruvananthapuram for BJP's election campaign on Monday, had called on Tharoor, who is trying for a hat-trick at Thiruvananthapuram.
