Members of the District Mahila Congress condemned the sexual assault of a 22-year-old girl by eight men recently.

In a press release, Charlotte Pinto, president of the District Mahila Congress, said that the incident had created shock ripples in the society.

“The Mahila Congress said that such inhuman acts should not take place in the coming days and women should be able to walk in public places without any fear,” she said.

“Dakshina Kannada Mahila Congress will conduct programmes to create awareness on women’s safety and drug abuse,” Pinto stressed.

The work of the police in nabbing the accused is appreciated, the press release said.

‘Give death sentence’

Durga Vahini, the Vishwa Hindu Parishat women’s cell, has strongly condemned the gang rape at Thota Bengre.

In a memorandum submitted to the police commissioner, the members have demanded that the rapists be hanged to death.

“The incident has exposed the increase in drug abuse in the district. Pubs in the city are open past midnight, increasing the vulnerability of women. Stern action should be initiated against illegal pubs and dance bars,” zonal convener Vidya Mallya has said, adding, “Durga Vahini will conduct a protest soon.”
