Dance the body music

His moves have been rocking the City’s streets for four years now. A BCom student from St Joseph’s College of Commerce, Aaron Victor, a street dancer, started out with “random moves and insignificant steps”, but now he is a member of the popular dance group, ‘The Biscuits Crew’.

His passion for dance developed after watching movies and videos by the ‘Jabberwocky Crew’. “I also saw my friends and seniors dancing in college and it seemed like fun. As I was not trained in any type of formal dance, two of my friends helped me learn a few basic moves in street-dancing,” he says.

Aaron has taken part in jam sessions and events around the City with his crew and is also training college students as well as adults in genres like hip-hop, funk and house. Apart from this, he is into choreography, mainly in Western and street dance for college fests. He has made a name for himself by winning competitions at college fests, including those conducted by St Joseph’s College and Reva Institute of Technology. He has also participated in events like ‘Kill or Die’, a popping championship and ‘Beat Down’. He has taken part in dance battles in Chennai and Goa.

His crew hosts dance events and is currently planning to conduct a major dance battle in Bengaluru. “We are in the initial stages of finding sponsors and the place but it should be over soon.”

When asked whether  dancing hinders his studies, Aaron says, “While I am in college, I don’t think of dancing and vice-versa.” Though he found it difficult in the beginning, through continuous practice, interest and dedication, Aaron could go further and pursue his passion. “I love to dance to instrumental and hip-hop music.”

He feels that the City should host more events and jams so that emerging artistes like him can experiment and innovate on their style.

“The idea is not to win but to improve,” he says. “One has to find one’s own style. I don’t follow anyone’s work because then my imagination would get hindered.” He loves dancing with his crew members and conducting auditions in various colleges for choreographies. “In a group dance, one has to remember to be in sync with the group and add to the formation. During practice, it’s all about understanding the partner’s steps.”

His inspirations are dance groups like ‘Paradox’, ‘Rock Ride’ and ‘Kite’ and he is currently kicked about participating in an international dance jam that will take place this year in India. “It’s tough as the DJ plays music on the spot and I have to adapt my style to it but it’s exciting at the same time. While dancing, one should just have fun, exhibit one’s style and feel the music.”
