Oxford University Press launched the ‘English-English-Kannada’ dictionary recently. S G Siddaramaiah, chairman, Kannada Development Authority, Government of Karnataka, was the Chief Guest at the launch event.
“We are delighted to launch our second English-English-Kannada dictionary. This is not only pedagogically more advanced but also designed along the contemporary methods of learning and teaching languages, enabling speakers of Kannada to also learn English seamlessly,” says Sivaramakrishnan Venkateswaran, managing director of Oxford University Press.

“The English-English- Kannada dictionary has over 52,000 up-to-date entries; related phrases and idioms in the English language, with their translations and one-word equivalents in simple Kannada,” says B V Sridhar, editor of the Oxford English-English-Kannada Dictionary.

“Compiling this dictionary took a lot of time. Looking for words which mean exactly the same in a different language needs a lot of language proficiency. The outcome is worth all the time invested,” says B V Sridhar, talking about the difficulties he faced while compiling the dictionary.

The dictionary contains example sentences and a wide range of scientific and technical vocabulary, including over 200 illustrations, synonyms and antonyms in English.

It also contains detailed notes in Kannada on English grammar, vocabulary and usage.

“This dictionary helps the newer generations as it makes them familiar with words and nuances of the language which might have been long forgotten. It will prove to be extremely useful for readers of all ages,” said S G Siddaramaiah, chairman, Kannada Development Authority, Government of Karnataka.

“We started working on it in 2011. It took us seven years to put everything together and present it in front of the world,”says B V Sridhar.

Oxford University Press India has been publishing bilingual dictionaries for almost three decades.
