'Even bad music grows on me'

Last Updated 28 May 2017, 18:28 IST

He may be young but he has achieved more than what most 22-year-olds might have. Palash Muchchal has earned the title of being the youngest music composer in Bollywood with chartbusters like ‘Party Toh Banti Hai’ and ‘Tu Hi Hai Aashiqui’.

Presently, he is working on 19 Bollywood projects which will release over the course of the year. Some of his latest projects include ‘Sweetie weds NRI’ and ‘Musafir’.

In a tete-a-tete with Anila Kurian, he talks about how he manages it all with ease.

How does it feel to be the youngest music composer in Bollywood?
Am really honoured. But I don’t let that get to my head as I am sure there is someone younger than me too who is very good. I am blessed to be at the right place at the right time.

You’re also studying...
Yes, I’m in my final year of BCom. I’m pursuing distance education, so it gives me enough time to manage both studies and music.

What’s your regular day like?
I am up all night and I go to sleep only around 8 am. I wake up around 3 pm, go for meetings if any and continue working till I go to sleep again. I like to maintain a bank of songs so that I can manage everything easily.

How’re you managing 19 projects?
It’s not as bad as everyone thinks it is. As I said, I like to keep a bank of songs, so it helps me stay organised. Add to that, I love what I do so it doesn’t feel like work.

You perform with your sister Palak for charity shows. What have you learnt from her?
She’s the one who helps me with my music, especially in writing it. She has more experience than I do in the field but she is very grounded. I’ve learnt from her that simplicity is what counts.

A song you don’t like...
I’m always listening to music so even if I don’t like it initially, it kind of grows on me. In short, even the bad music grows on me.

The best compliment you’ve received.
Himansh Kohli, who is a part of ‘Sweetie weds NRI’, once told me that it’s not my life that I am changing but also his. For an actor to say something like this has to be the best compliment for me.

And the worst one?
It’s probably when people criticise the musician for a song that I have created. That hurts because it’s my work that someone else is promoting.

Any plans of becoming an actor?
I’m not saying no to acting but I am enjoying the ‘behind the scenes’ action right now.

If you were to give up music for something, what would it be?
My family.

If you could drop everything and run away, where would you go?
Mumbai! It’s probably not the ideal place for one to choose but I love the city. There’s always so much happening.
