Designer Masaba says she makes luxury affordable

Last Updated 19 April 2019, 10:13 IST

Known for her unique designs combining Indian and modern aesthetics, ace designer Masaba Gupta launched her first store in the city on Wednesday.
Masaba is a well-known name in the fashion industry and Bollywood fraternity. With many stores across major cities in India, her label 'Masaba' is popular among the fashionistas.
Amidst her busy schedule, Masaba spoke to Malini Raghu about her new store, projects and more.

Tell us about your new store in the city.

We have done multiple pop-ups in the city. It took us time to launch the store as we had to understand the taste of the Bengalureans. We have a mix of women across all ages trying to discover the brand. The idea is to provide affordable luxury wear to people.

Also, it is one of my favourite stores because it is the first one that houses our jewellery line. My jewellery has a touch of the south Indian flavour; it is temple-jewellery inspired. I think it will be received well as people in the South have a better understanding of jewellery.

Your thoughts on Bengaluru's style quotient.

One thing I noticed about the city is that the women don't like owning what somebody else owns. Also, the ladies love fusion wear; nothing too Indian, nothing too western. They are a very mix and match kind of an audience.

You have also launched a new swimwear collection. Tell us about that.

It is something I wanted to do for a long time. I created easy, light and fashionable pieces that are not too heavy on design and are comfortable to wear. Women like me, who are slightly heavier, don't find swimwear which is comfortable. There is no Indian label that provides that, so, I decided to cater to that.

What's in the pipeline?

Our first Banarasi line is coming out soon. We also have a special Game of Thrones collection. We are also planning to expand.

Masaba’s summer fashion tips

- Avoid synthetic fabrics. Wear a lot of cotton and light clothing.

- Wear lighter shades; it will beat the heat, and you will feel lighter.

- Always opt for loose outfits like a palazzo pant or a shirt.

- They are breezy and will prevent rashes.
