What summer holds for Amrita

Cookery show host gives you tips on how to stay cool this summer

Amrita Raichand

Summer is here, and it hasn’t been missed; I have been quite well without it.

Now that it is here, I have some plans to great the season. I use the word great because I don’t want to treat it as an enemy anymore, staying true to my resolution for 2019 of turning everything that feels remotely negative into a positive experience.

So this summer, for me, will be about inculcating good habits. To cultivate a habit takes about three weeks of continuous effort. We often find excuses not to do things that are good for us throughout the year because we lose our consistency at it. So, summer is the right time to begin.

Here are a few things that I will be working on, and you can too.

Wake up early in the morning

Nights are short during summers, so that helps. But, you can’t do much that early in the morning as work doesn’t start before 9 for most people in India. So, get into your workout clothes, and hit the gym or go for a run. Trust me, you will capture the most pleasant temperature of the day. Also, you will be surprised as to how much more you can accomplish throughout the day just by waking up a couple of hours early every morning.

Drink more water

Most of us don’t drink enough water even though we all know the thumb rule -- 6 to 8 glasses at least every day. Get into the habit of keeping a bottle of water close to you and count how many you can finish in a day. Reiterating what I said earlier, a habit takes 21 days to form.

Eat more fruits and veggies

This is the right time to indulge in fruits and veggies. You will see yourself getting pulled towards the colourful and juicy fruits which you shy away from most of the times. Meat
and ‘masaledar’ food will not be that attractive anymore as it turns up your body heat. So, make sure to indulge in more vegetarian food and lighter sources of protein. At some level, we will all end up helping the environment this way.

Stay curious

I agree it is too hot to step out, but instead of being a couch potato, use that time wisely; do some research on the net or read interesting books as no knowledge ever goes waste.

On that note, let me end by quoting John Mayer -- “’cause a little bit of summer is what the whole year is all about.”
