Sufi and folk music tunes to entertain flight travellers

The wait at the Indira Gandhi International Airport’s (IGIA) T3 Terminal  will no longer be boring with the launch of ‘Mirchi T3’, a 24x7 radio station.

The music trio of Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy have joined hands with Radio Mirchi and the Delhi International Airport (P) Limited (DIAL), to broadcast different genres of music ranging from folk to sufi.

“At the airport, one can be in a hurry if late, or in an entirely mellow mood while waiting at the queues and check-ins. In the mean time, we have a lot of independent and non-film music, offered by platforms like Coke Studio and a lot of indie and sufi bands, which never get enough space to be heard by the audience. So offering people to get to hear this kind of music while in such moods can actually be experimental and exciting,” says Mahadevan.

While still deciding on the amount of time to be dedicated to commercials, the radio channel will wait for the feedback from the visitors. “For the first time ever, people will pay around Rs 7,000 (flight tickets) for listening to radio,” says Riya Mukherjee, creative consultant, Radio Mirchi.

Not denying that radio tends to be our ultimate companion during those never ending hours that we spend in traffic, we perhaps never realise the evolution that the medium of broadcast communication has taken place in the past few years.

On being asked as to how they plan to select this music and decide as to what music will be liked by a regular traveller, Mukherjee tells Metrolife, “In the market, we have the music that is loved by the masses and the other niche kind of music. So according to the market statistics, we are going to have filtered music presented to the premium audience.”
