There is no age limit when it comes to listening to good music.
The audience present at the Sur Taal concert, held at the UB City recently, only proved that. Children, young couples and senior citizens had assembled at the open air amphitheatre braving the cold weather to be part of an evening of world music.
And with Grammy Award-winning tabla player Trilok Gurtu taking centre stage, there was not one music afficionado who wanted to give it a miss.
Sunil, who had given up his night of partying for the concert, said, “it was tough convincing my friends to come for this concert. But the way I see it, one can go partying any time but concerts like these don’t come too often and I am sure they won’t let you down.”
Popular band ‘Rhythm & Raaga’ was the opening act for the evening but due to some technical glitches, the audience had to wait for nearly 45 minutes before the concert began.
This irritated some of the fans while some even wondered why musicians wait till the last moment to do sound checking.
“Having paid a huge price for the tickets, one expects them to start the concert on time,” said Dhananjay, who had come to the concert with his family.
The late start even made some members in the
audience scream to which Gopi, the lead percussionist of the band, said, “This is not a rock concert for people to scream and shout.”
Nevertheless, the band more than made up for the delay and put the audience’s woes to rest.
Bringing in a perfect blend of classical, folk and sufi, ‘Rhythm & Raaga’ warmed up the stage for Trilok. Sangeetha Srikishen, who was on the vocals, said that the concert was a fund-raiser for their music school, World Music Center.
“We want to promote young talents and hopefully with the support of people, we can make this happen,” she added.
Known to be one of the most open-minded musicians, Trilok was accompanied by Ravi Chari on the sitar. Laila, who is a fan of Trilok, said that every moment of the concert was brilliant.
“The way he transcends from one genre to another is what I really enjoyed. The City is always open to so many different kinds of music and I’m glad that it made way to something like this as well,” she added.
