Last Updated 23 August 2018, 17:46 IST

MLC and State JD(S) General Secretary B M Farooq said the government has decided to upgrade the 66 KV power substation in the city to a 110 KV gas insulated substation to solve the shortage of electricity.

Addressing media persons at Circuit House here on Thursday, he said that the power line will be laid underground and a tunnel way will be laid on Shiradi Ghat section.

He also said that the Infrastructure Development Department is acquiring 36 acres of land towards the extension of the runway in Mangaluru International Airport.

The chief minister has written to the Union Civil Aviation Ministry to operate additional flights from Mangaluru to Bengaluru, the MLC added.

“The chief minister aspires to develop Melkar Junction-Mangaluru University-Pumpwell Road as a four-lane way and to upgrade Mangalore Airport road into an eight-lane one.”

While congratulating the chief minister for not fixing conditions to waive the loans of only one farmer from a family, Farooq requested him to provide compensation to arecanut growers too. Arecanut crop has been lost on 20,000 hectares of land, he said.

Farooq urged the government to implement scientific methods to prevent artificial floods.

Harihara-Kalmakaru-Galibeedu and Arantodu-Patti-Bhagamandala roads should be repaired permanently. Owing to infrastructure loss, around Rs 200 crore may be required to fulfil the damage, he felt.

“A proposal has been submitted to prepare an action plan towards the study of cultivation of suitable crops, according to the climate of the district. Requests have been made to establish a laboratory towards the study of plant diseases,” he said.

Stress has to be laid on developing Mangaluru as a commercial hub through the rejuvenation of Canara Industrial Area on 600 acres, earmarked in Mudipu as a part of Mangaluru Speical Economic Zone, he said.

He said that as an MLC, he has selected Dakshina Kannada as the nodal district. His office will be opened on the premises of the DC’s office and the public can address their grievances to him. The inauguration of the office will be held in the first week of September. JD(S) Supremo H D Devegowda and JD(S) State President
H Vishwanath will attend. A party workers’ meet will also be held on the occasion, he said.

JD(S) leaders M B Sadashiva, Vasanth Poojary and Sushil Norohna were present on the occasion.
