One Central Force jawan died and two others were critically injured in West Bengal’s Howrah district on Thursday when a jawan allegedly opened fire following a heated exchange with his colleagues.

The incident took place in the Bagnan area of Howrah, where the jawans were deployed for the upcoming bypoll in the Uluberia Assembly segment. The jawans were lodged in a local school.

“One jawan was killed and two others were critically injured in the incident,” a senior district police official said. The deceased jawan belonged to the Assam Rifles.

Although locals said that there was an exchange of fire between two groups of jawans, sources in the Assam Rifles said that one of the jawans opened fire on his colleagues.

The accused has been arrested and the matter is being probed by Commandment rank officer.

The district police have also apprised the District Magistrate and the office of the Chief Electoral Officer about the incident.

However, there has not been any official announcement by either the police or Assam Rifles about the chain of events that led to the tragic incident.
