Post poll violence erupts in Bengal, one dead

Post-poll violence erupted in West Bengal on Saturday and one person died and several others were injured during clashes between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the BJP.

A BJP worker was shot dead allegedly by TMC cadres in the Chakdaha area of Nadia district late on Friday night.

BJP workers staged road and rail blockade at several places in the district in protest against the incident.

The TMC leadership alleged that several of their party offices across the states was attacked by BJP cadres during the day. Majority of the incidents took place in Cooch Behar district where TMC party offices were attacked allegedly by BJP workers in Rampur, Mahishkuchi, Shalbari and Bakshirhat areas.

TMC party offices were also attacked in Bakura district where a BJP worker was allegedly shot at. TMC party offices were also captured by BJP cadres in the Kakinada area in Barrackpore Lok Sabha constituency.

BJP had emerged victorious in Cooch Behar, Bankura and Barrackpore constituencies.

West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi appealed to the people of the state to maintain peace and harmony.

“Hon'ble Governor Shri Keshari Nath Tripathi conveys thanks to the people of West Bengal for participating in the festival of Lok Sabha election of the largest democracy of the world. He appeals to them to maintain peace in accordance with the rich culture of Bengal and unitedly work for the prosperity and progress of the state and the nation,” said a statement issued by the Raj Bhavan.
