2 children raped in Delhi, Kejriwal accuses police of being complete failure

Two children, including a two-and-a-half-year-old, were gang-raped in the national Capital on Friday, sending shockwaves and triggering slugfest between political parties.

The police said while a five-year-old was assaulted by three men in East Delhi’s Anand Vihar, the other was gang-raped by two motorcycle-borne men in West Delhi’s Nihal Vihar.

According to the police, the perpetrators in the first case have been arrested.
The girl was taken to Dr Hedgewar Arogya Sansthan and later referred to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital.

“The assault left the girl bleeding from her private parts. Currently, her condition is stated to be stable,” said B S Gurjar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East).

The incident came to light when the girl came running out of her building at 5.30 pm. On being questioned by the local people, she said the name of a tenant in the building. Local people found three men drinking inside the house. They were pulled out onto the street and thrashed before being handed over to the police. The trio has been booked under POSCO Act and a magistrate has remanded the three to judicial custody.

The main accused has been identified as 39-year-old Prakash, who lived in the top floor of the three-storey building with his wife and three children. The other two accused have been identified as Revati and Sitaram, who is the owner of the building.

In the second incident, the child was kidnapped and raped. The girl was later found at a park around 300 metres away from her house. The accused were seen in CCTV footage, but are yet to be arrested. The girl was with her grandmother at a Ramlila function when she was kidnapped.

Police said the incident occurred around 11 pm. Some people attending the Ramlila function told the police that they saw two men on a motorcycle abducting the girl. She was later found unconscious in a park with multiple injury marks.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who met the victims, asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to either “act himself” or give control over the Delhi Police to the AAP government.
He said the PM is answerable if the Centre wants the police to be under its control. He has also sought a meeting with the PM and Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung to discuss women’s safety in Delhi.

BJP leader Vijendra Gupta accused Kejriwal of politicising the rape. Kejriwal is trying to distance himself from the issue of women’s security in the city, he said.
