The multi-crore Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KNPP) in Tamil Nadu has generated about 200 MW power, which was fed to the southern grid on Tuesday.

The first unit of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP), beset by controversies as locals raised questions about safety of nuclear plants, started generating 75 MW electricity after it was synchronised to the grid on October 22.

"This was gradually increased to 160 MW power in various stages and at present the unit is generating about 200 MW power", a senior official from KNPP said.

The official added power generation would increase from 500 MW to 700 MW in several phases. “At every stage or level, various tests will be conducted and the technical parameters will also be verified,” he said. “The targets will be achieved based on the results of tests at each of the stages and with Atomic Energy Regulatory Board clearances.” The official maintained that the unit is yet to go commercial despite starting to generate power.
