JOIN USHeavy rain lashed many parts of Kerala’s northern districts on Monday. Four people—including a high school student who died when a wall collapsed on him—were killed in rain-related accidents in Kannur and Malappuram districts.Kannur and Irikkur received very heavy rainfall. The Meteorological Centre in the capital reported that both stations received 18 cm rainfall on Monday.
Meanwhile, more residents in the coastal region of Valiathura in Thiruvananthapuram were being transferred to relief camps after copious amounts of rain damaged more houses over the weekend. According to official reports, around 500 people have already been moved to relief camps in the Valiathura region. Residents said they were “fed up” with the makeshift arrangements that have become an annual monsoon-season affair and demanded a permanent solution to the crisis.
Piravam, Vadakara, Kozhikode, Kunnamkulam, Quilandy and Ponnani received very heavy rainfall through the day, according to the Met centre.
The south-west monsoon that arrived in Kerala on June 1 has so far led to a cumulative rainfall of 573.6 mm as against the normal rainfall during the corresponding period, of 340.5 mm. This is a 69 per cent jump on normal figures.
