In a shocking incident in Chittoor, the native district of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, five minors have been detained by the police for sexually exploiting a 12-year-old girl for three months.

They had threatened the girl that they would kill her if she informed her parents.

The boys, all aged 16-17 years, were produced before the court and subsequently shifted to a juvenile home after judicial remand.

The girl was sent for medical examination.

According to Punganur police inspector P Sainath, one of the boys first raped her by luring her with chocolates.

He then introduced her to his friends, who continued exploiting her.

The girl is from a poor family in Bhagat Singh Nagar in Punganur town. Her father is dead and mother is a labourer.

Among the boys, two are class VII students, one is in Class X, one is in intermediate, while one is illiterate.

They all live in the girl's neighborhood and their parents are labourers, too.

Unable to bear the harassment by the boys anymore, the girl on Wednesday opened up before her mother.

She sought the help of locals in catching them. The villagers caught hold of the two boys and thrashed them in public before handing them over to the police.

"We have booked cases under Section 376 of Indian Penal Code, besides relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act," the inspector said.

Just a week ago, Chandrababu had announced that rapists would get the death penalty on the same day they commit the offence. He had launched a mass campaign to instill a sense of security and support.
