942 police medals awarded on eve of I-Day

As many as 154 personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were bestowed with prestigious police medals, with the government on Tuesday announcing service decorations for a total of 942 state police and paramilitary personnel on the eve of the 72nd Independence Day.

Two of its CRPF jawans from Jammu and Kashmir, constable Sharief-ud-din Ganaie and head constable Mohd Tafail, who laid down their lives in the line of duty, were decorated with the President's police medal gallantry medal posthumously.

This is the highest-ever gallantry medals tally for the CRPF so far, a senior official said.

A total of 18 police personnel from Karnataka were bestowed with the police medals for meritorious service, while Uttar Pradesh saw the highest number of police officers being decorated with the prestigious medals.

While a total of 77 police officers from Uttar Pradesh were conferred with the prestigious police medals, one of them was awarded with the police medal for gallantry, six with the President's police medal for distinguished service and 70 with police medal for meritorious service.

Uttar Pradesh was followed by Maharashtra with as many as 51 police officers from the state being awarded with the police medals.

Of them, eight were conferred police medal for gallantry, three President's police medal for distinguished service and 40 with police medal for meritorious service.

A total of 47 police officers from the militancy-hit Jammu and Kashmir were bestowed with police medals with 37 of them getting a medal for gallantry, one with President's medal for distinguished service and nine with police medal for meritorious service.

As many as 32 police officers from Assam were bestowed with police medals; 29 each from Odisha Police and Gujarat Police; 25 from Tamilnadu Police; 24 each from Delhi and West Bengal Police, 23 from Madhya Pradesh Police, 16 each from Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh Police; 14 from Bihar; and six from Kerala.

A total of 177 police medals for gallantry were awarded this year, while the number of President's police medal for distinguished service came at 88, police medal for meritorious service 675.

"With counter-insurgency and militancy operations stepped up in the Kashmir valley, the maximum number of gallantry medals have come in this theatre for the forces. These operations are jointly conducted by the CRPF, the J&K Police and its special operations group (SOG) and the army," an officer said.

While the highest number of police medals went to the CRPF personnel, a total of 61 personnel from Border Security Force (BSF) were recipients of the prestigious medals under various categories, 34 from the Intelligence Bureau (IB), 30 from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), 26 from Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), 14 from the Indo Tibet Border Police (ITBP) and 18 from the Railway Protection Force.
