AAP alleges Cong-Modi connivance over snoopgate case

Last Updated 19 April 2014, 21:22 IST

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) asked the BJP and the Congress to make public their stands on the  “illegal snooping of a young woman by the Narendra Modi government of Gujarat in 2009”.

The party expressed apprehension of a deal between the BJP's prime ministerial candidate and the Congress of sparing each other on serious allegations.

“The Congress leadership, including its vice-president Rahul Gandhi, are silent on why their party-led Central government has not even bothered for four months to appoint a judge to probe the issue which concerns the basic human right to privacy of an individual,” said the AAP on Saturday.

The Union Cabinet had decided on December 26, 2013, to appoint a commission to probe the case.

“Outgoing home and law ministers Sushilkumar Shinde and Kapil Sibal made no efforts to get the probe started in such a serious matter, and rendered the much-hyped inquiry commission into a non-starter,” alleged the party.

“It appears that the Congress agreed not to probe the snooping involving the Narendra Modi government in return of an assurance from the BJP that no top leader of the party or their relatives would be troubled once they are out of power,” said the AAP.

“The BJP is deliberately avoiding answering any question on snooping since the party is well aware that it cannot fool the people by falsely promising women's safety when the reality is that its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi had ordered surveillance of a young woman,” it alleged.

“Both these parties cannot be allowed to mislead the people of Varanasi on the issue of women's safety through their mysterious silence,” said the AAP.
