Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Chandni Chowk MLA Alka Lamba was hit by a stone when she started asking shop-owners to remove encroachments as part of an anti-drug drive in north Delhi’s Kashmere Gate on Sunday.

The incident took place when Lamba was carrying out the anti-drug drive to mark Quit India Movement Day.

The accused, Jatin, was overpowered by the public and handed over to the police. A case has been registered against the 19-year-old under Section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code with the Kashmere Gate police station.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal showed solidarity with Lamba soon after the incident, tweeting: “Proud of you Alka.”

Lamba started the drive with AAP volunteers around 5:15 am on Sunday. “We had informed the police last night we would conduct an anti-drug drive in the area. But no police personnel came to the site till after 6:30 am,” said a volunteer. However, a senior police officer said four policemen were deployed at the area. “She was attacked when she started telling a few shop-owners they had encroached on public land,” said the officer. “Removing encroachment is the municipal corporations' job. No civic agency officials was present during the drive.” AAP workers said Lamba was hit in front of a shop.
