Activist Swami Agnivesh was targeted near BJP headquarters by party supporters on Friday when he went there to pay his last respects to former Prime Minister A B Vajpayee.

This comes exactly a month after he was assaulted in Jharkhand's Pakur by activists of BJP affiliates Yuva Morcha and ABVP for his anti-BJP stand.

As Agnivesh was walking towards the BJP headquarters on Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg, a group of supporters spotted him and started showering abuses at him. Suddenly, they pushed him and wanted him to return. While he was chased by a group of people, another man was trying to shield him.

"They were around 15-20 people. They were pushing me as I was walking towards the BJP office. They even beat me. My spectacles were damaged and my 'pagdi' (headgear) fell down. The more reprehensible thing was that none of those present there tried to help me," Agnivesh told DH. A video of the attack on him went viral.

"They pushed me and kept abusing me. Some policemen were standing there but these persons, including some women, carrying slippers, kept abusing me," he said adding he had informed Union Minister Harsh Vardhan before visiting there.

He claimed he had to make a retreat and walk back amid BJP supporters abusing him. A woman was seen raising her slippers at him.

Agnivesh said after walking for some distance, he saw a police jeep and the policemen offered to take him to safety. The police driver then dropped him at his office on Jantar Mantar road.

"Unfortunately, till now, there is not a single word of condemnation from any BJP leader," Agnivesh added.
