Agra lovers 'hounded' by Uttar Pradesh MLA, police

Their crime: Couples belong to different religions

They are allegedly being “hounded” by a ruling party (BSP) legislator and the police. The police also conducted raids in Agra and other hideouts in a bid to nab them.

If you thought either of them has violated any section of the Indian Penal Code, you would be wrong. But in the eyes of some, the duo committed a serious crime—they fell in love and got married against the wishes of their families despite their religious beliefs.

Since their court marriage on May 26 last, Zunaira and Arun have been running from place to place fearing for their lives. In the past few months, the couple had run away to Allahabad, Jaipur and other places.

“The MLA from Agra Cantonment Zulfiquar Bhutto has threatened us with dire consequences. He (MLA) wants us to separate or else be ready to face the consequences...he has said that he can trace us even if we hide in the remotest corner of India,” Zunaira alleged. “The entire administration and the police are with the MLA,” she alleged further.

Zunaira’s family had lodged a report with the Agra police alleging that Arun had abducted her. They also claimed that Zunaira was a minor, a claim strongly refuted by Zunaira.
The harassed couple got some relief from the Allahabad High Court, which, on a petition moved by them a few days back, directed the Superintendent of Police, Agra, to provide them adequate security and also stayed Arun’s arrest.

Zunaira had met Arun at the company where she worked. Arun had gone there for some work about two years back. Soon they fell in love despite knowing that they hailed from different religions. “It never occurred to me that Arun was a Hindu... I always felt he was an Indian and that is the reason why I married him,” Zunaira said.
