The role of leaders in Uttar Pradesh who held the mining portfolio between 2012 and 2016, including former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, in illegal mining of minor minerals in the state will be under the scanner of CBI.

CBI sources said that it will investigate the role of ministers and bureaucrats. It came on a day when Samajwadi Party and BSP leaders indicated that their leaders will soon announce an electoral alliance for the Lok Sabha polls before the month ends.

On Saturday, the CBI conducted searches at 14 locations in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, which are related to a Samajwadi Party MLC Ramesh Mishra and IAS officer B Chandrakala among others, in connection with investigations into illegal sand mining. The case relates to illegal mining of minor minerals during 2012 and 2016.

The searches were spread across multiple districts including Jalaun, Hamirpur, Lucknow and also in Delhi. The CBI had taken up the case on the instructions of Allahabad High Court in 2016. On this basis, seven preliminary enquiries were launched.

CBI sources said officials allowed illegal mining during 2012 and 2016. They allegedly illegally renewed licenses when the National Green Tribunal had banned illegal mining for a limited time. "Even during the limited ban, the officials allowed illegal mining," a senior official said.

Sources said they will probe the role of ministers, including former Chief Minister Yadav, and bureaucrats in connection with the case.

Sources said they will examine Yadav in connection with the case.

Another former minister Gayatri Prasad Prajapati is also likely to be examined in the case
