Alappad case: activists call for NOTA in Kerala

Last Updated 04 May 2019, 11:03 IST

A social media campaign was started by some activists as part of an anti-mining stir in Kollam district in South Kerala asking people to vote NOTA in the Lok Sabha elections.

However, a section of leaders in the stir are not agreeing to this.

Hundreds of people from the coastal village of Alappad, which comes under the Alappuzha constituency, have been on an indefinite stir since last year alleging that due to indiscriminate mining of mineral sand, their village shrank from about 90 sq km in 1955 to hardly nine sq km now.

A section of activists maintained that since no mainstream political parties were not showing any genuine concern for long fight, the people should register their protest by opting NOTA.

But the action council leader K C Sreekumar said that the action council was only appealing to the participants in the stir to vote as per their conscience as political support would be required in future.
