BJP member wants probe into gold import scheme

Last Updated 30 July 2018, 17:15 IST

A BJP member on Monday demanded registration of an FIR against the then finance minister, the then RBI governor and the then finance ministry officials who approved the 20:80 gold import scheme in the final days of the UPA government.

“I urge the government to launch an inquiry in the 20:80 scheme, lodge an FIR and order CBI and ED inquiry on the then finance minister, RBI governor, economic affairs secretary and financial services secretary to bring out the scam,” BJP member Nishikant Dubey said in the Lok Sabha during the Zero Hour.

He said the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate should probe the former minister and other officials to unveil the scam involved in the scheme.

Dubey did not name neither the minister nor the RBI governor.

Dubey claimed the scheme was brought in to benefit “some business houses” and had caused a loss of Rs one lakh crore to the country.

BJD member Bhartruhari Mahtab said the government should respond to the allegations made by Dubey.

In August 2013, the then UPA government had introduced the 20:80 rule which allowed banks and public sector companies to import gold on the condition that 20% of it will have to be exported.

The UPA government has extended this scheme to premium trading houses and star trading houses in May 2014.

The rule was scrapped in November 2014 after the NDA came to power.
