BJP, Shiv Sena sparring results in hung House

Last Updated 02 November 2015, 20:27 IST

The high-stake political face-off between BJP’s Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray has resulted in a hung House in the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC).

The Shiv Sena also suffered a setback as Mayor Kalyani Patil was defeated by Suman Nikam of the BJP. In the 122 wards of the KDMC, the Shiv Sena emerged as the single-largest party with 52 seats, followed by the BJP which managed to win 42 seats.

The surprise package was Owaisi brothers-led All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) which opened its account with a lone seat and so did Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party.

The Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), which won 28 seats in the last election, won only nine seats this year. But MNS is likely to emerge as the kingmaker.

The Congress has four seats, the Sharad Pawar-led NCP two and other parties, including Independent candidates, have won 11 seats. Voting was held in 117 wards as two villages boycotted the election and three villages elected candidates unopposed.

The four major parties, the BJP, Shiv Sena, Congress and the NCP, besides the MNS, contested the polls independently. Sena has several options before it, including joining hands with the BJP to retain power or join hands with the MNS and secure support of one independent or create a front of Sena and
independents.

Reacting to the results, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy tweeted: “The Kalyan-Dombivli result is a setback to Award Wapasis and missionaries since Hindutva forces won 90 pc of the seats despite division of votes.”
