BJP to announce Uttar Pradesh nominees' list in August

Last Updated 11 July 2016, 19:20 IST

The BJP is planning to come out with first list of candidates in August for UP. The state is slated to go for polls next year.

Winning candidates would figure in the first list which the party is expected to announce around August 15, said BJP sources. Other lists would follow a month later.

The BJP move for declaring candidates early is aimed at giving time to them to work in their respective constituencies. The party does not have enough faces for putting up a good fight in the electoral contest, said.

In the last three elections, the BJP had got less than 100 seats with its worst performance in 2012. In the last Assembly polls, the BJP got 47 out of total 403 seats pushing it to number three slot, after the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samajwadi Party.

It did exceptionally well in the last 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Riding on the Modi wave, the BJP won 71 of the total 80 seats placing it in a better position to fight state polls.

After tying up with Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party – a party mostly representing Rajbhar OBC community – the BJP wants to have similar alliances with smaller parties to target Most Backward Classes in its weaker region of eastern UP.
